Honoring Arnold Palmer

One of the most famous golfers of all time passed away on September 25, 2016. He died while awaiting heart surgery, he was 87 years old. He was a great golfer of his time, and was known for his famous drink of half lemonade and half iced tea. Palmer was born in Latrobe, Pennsylvania on Sept. 10, 1929. Here are some things you may or may not have known about the late and great Arnold Palmer.

At one point in time Arnold Palmer owned more than 10,000 golf clubs. He kept them all in a warehouse at the Latrobe Country Club in Pennsylvania.

During his career he had won seven majors (the US Open, the British Open twice, the Masters four times).  He won the Masters Tournament in 1958, 1960 1962 and 1964. He won the US Open in 1960, and the Open Championship in 1961 and 1962.

He has also won 92 professional tournaments worldwide.

His career lasted more than six decades.

He had a very forceful swing, and wasn’t a dainty player. He once uprooted a bush during a swing, while getting a ball out on a golf course.

He was famous for coming back from behind in tournaments, something that was eventually named the “Palmer Charge.”

He used to play rounds of golf with President Eisenhower.

His nickname is “The King.”

He was also a pilot for 50 years of his life.

Palmer won 62 PGA tour tiles in the years 1955 to 1973.

Palmer’s father was the head professional and greens keeper at the Latrobe Country Club in Pennsylvania, which is how Arnold became interested in golf.

He was known for wearing his emotions on his sleeve, in life and on the green. If he made a bad shot, you could see his disdain on his face.

Let all of Arnold Palmer’s accomplishments inspire you to play better golf, perhaps taking more risks and with more reckless swings. Visit your local golf course at River’s Edge and play a round for him.
