First Time Teeing It Up? A Beginner’s Guide to Golf

Golf may be one of the world’s oldest games, but you’re never too old to get started. If you’re thinking about hitting the links for the first time there are a few things you’ll need to know–like where to go, what you need and who can help. Luckily, River’s Edge Golf Course, one of the best golf courses in Bend, can put you on course to becoming a golfer.

Pick Up Sticks

You won’t be ready to start swinging until you procure some golf clubs to swing. If you’re ready for commitment then head to our golf pro shop to be fitted for woods, irons and wedges. However, golf equipment can be a significant investment and you may want to consider renting a full set of clubs from us before you buy. Our staff will set you up with clubs that fit you and recommend other equipment like balls, gloves, apparel and shoes from the top brands in golf.

Practice Where You Play

Once you’ve been well-equipped by the pro shop staff, you’re ready to go for the green—the practice green. And the driving range. You don’t need to have a perfect swing before you play your first round of golf, but you will want to have spent some time practicing before you step up to the first tee box. The beautiful practice facility at River’s Edge Golf Course includes a driving range with all grass tees and several targets to test your aim so that you can get used to what it feels like to be out on the course. The practice facility also includes a large putting surface where you can work on your chipping and learn to line up a putt. Once you feel at home on the River’s Edge Golf Course driving range, you’re just a few yards away from testing your skills at one of Golf Digest’s “Best Places to Play.”

Take Some Advice From A Pro

It’s OK if you aren’t a natural—even pro golfers have coaches. The best way for a beginner golfer to get into the swing of things is to take a lesson with a pro. It’s important that you find an instructor who you’re compatible with and who has the proper education to teach you the game. Look for a golf pro with a PGA or LPGA accreditation or ask your friends to recommend a pro. Just don’t be surprised when they direct you to River’s Edge Golf Course lesson program. Our adult golf clinics will have you hitting the fairway in no time. If you’re finally ready to tee it up, then head over to what Central Oregon magazine called Central Oregon’s “favorite golf course” and get started today. It’s never too late.
