Seasonal Changes to Golf in the Fall

Most people think of golf as a summer sport. You get out in the sunshine and warm weather, avoiding the colder weather of the fall, or the muddy weather of the spring. Most golf players will tell you that fall is their favorite season to play golf in. Here’s why:

Fall Golf

The courses become less crowded in the fall. Tourists go home, kids go back to school, families go back to a more consistent and normal routine. Parents have less time to play golf, due to other responsibilities. And so less people head out to play a couple rounds of golf, and the course is left to the true players. Golf quickly becomes tense and annoying when the course is full, and there’s a group of people waiting for you to take your shot. When the courses become less crowded, you’re at your leisure to take your time, line it up and make the perfect shot. The pace of play slows down, and there’s less of a rush to finish your game. People are simply enjoying their time on the course.

Some players wait until fall to invest in new clubs. Clubs go on sale in the Fall before new clubs are released at premium pricing in the Spring. So some golfers buy clubs in the Fall, and start using them. Some golfers enjoy rounds of golf played in the Fall just a little more than Summer golf, because they know it could very well be their last round of the season. You never know when the rain could come, or the first snowfall of the season could hit, so any golf game played in the fall is like a bonus. You enjoy it will you’re lucky enough to have it.

Some golf courses offer deals for fall golf, in addition to summer pricing going down. It can be more affordable to play a round in the fall.

The Weather

Some players enjoy the time of year most for the weather. Some people enjoy the bite of a brisk wind, and how it effects their game. They find it challenging. When you play golf in the fall you don’t have to worry about a hot day, or humidity. You might wear an extra layer or two, but you’ll be comfortable the whole time, and not thinking about how hot it is on the course.

A secret benefit of fall golf is that the ground is hardening up and the grass isn’t growing as fast. This allows for an extra roll on your ball, and makes it easier to find without tall grass.

If you’re lucky enough to live near great fall foliage, playing golf can offer some spectacular views in the fall. It can be more beautiful than playing on a warm summer day.

Take Away

Just because there’s a chill in the air and the kids are back in school, doesn’t mean that your golf season has to be over. Some of the best days of golf are still to come. You may enjoy them more knowing that each stroke could be your last of the seasons.
